 | Activities related to Christmas tree production begin in mid to late-March each Spring. At that time intensive clean-up operations occur. Each stump of a tree harvested the previous Christmas is re-cut so it is level with the ground surface. All cut stump sections as well as branches, twigs, portions of trees, etc. is picked up and stacked. On a day when favorable weather conditions are present the pile is burned; this usually takes place in late April. Stumps of Scotch pine and white pine are treated to reduce the population of pales weevils; an insect that can cause serious injury to the twigs of several conifers used for Christmas tree purposes. | | Beginning about the middle of April and continuing on until the task is completed in early May, new trees are planted. This past year about 10,000 4-year old transplants were planted. Approximately 2500 of these were used to replace young trees that died because of drought conditions that occurred following transplanting in the Spring of 2004. About 60 percent of all new plantings are Fraser fir, followed by smaller amounts of Balsam/Canaan fir, Colorado blue spruce, Douglas fir, White pine, and Scotch pine. Following planting all trees are treated with appropriate herbicide materials to reduce weed competition. | | The growing season and summer of 2006 have been very favorable for good tree growth. We have received adequate precipitation and irrigated new plantings when necessary. As a result, survival and growth have been good and the quality of trees offered for this Christmas season excellent. | | A small “pumpkin patch” was planted in 2004. A relatively good crop of pumpkins were produced and limited sales were conducted in October, 2004. This year the “patch” was expanded substantially, cultivated intensively, and watered regularly. As a result we have a good crop of healthy pumpkins…..all ready for you to select your own. Beginning the first week in October pumpkins can be purchased at the Tannenbaum Farms barn. Additionally, on the weekends of October 15-16, 22-23, and 29-30 wagon rides, our concession area, and bonfire will be operating. Pumpkins will be available in the concession areas as well as at the Barn. Weekend hours of operation will be from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm on Saturdays, and from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm on Sundays. Pumpkins range in size from 5 to 35 pounds, and will be reasonably priced. | | Landscape stock is now available. |
